Welche Behörde ist zuständig?
Was genau ist Kindergeld?
Das Kindergeld zahlt der Staat vielen Familien in Deutschland jeden Monat. Du bekommst es für jedes Kind bis 18 Jahre, in besonderen Fällen bis maximal 25 Jahre. Seit Januar 2026 sind das 259 Euro pro Kind – unabhängig von deinem Einkommen.
Das Geld bekommt die Person, bei der das Kind lebt. Wohnt das Kind bei keinem der Eltern, bekommt das Geld der Elternteil, der dem Kind mehr Unterhalt zahlt. Wenn du in Berlin wohnst, musst du das Kindergeld bei der Familienkasse Berlin Brandenburg beantragen. Familien mit wenig Einkommen können auch Kinderzuschlag bekommen (mehr dazu beim Berliner Familienportal).
Kann ich Kindergeld bekommen?
- du mit deinem 0–18-jährigen Kind in Berlin wohnst oder hier gemeldet bist
- du in Berlin wohnst und dein 18–25-jähriges Kind in Berlin oder an einem anderen Ort zum Beispiel eine Ausbildung oder ein Studium macht. Erfahre hier mehr zu den Bedingungen: Kindergeld | Bundesagentur für Arbeit

Aufenthaltserlaubnis
Mit den meisten Aufenthaltserlaubnissen hast du Zugang zum Kindergeld. Deine Aufenthaltserlaubnis muss aber für mindestens sechs Monate gültig sein.
Mit einigen Aufenthaltserlaubnissen hast du keinen Zugang oder es gibt besondere Voraussetzungen:
- Manchmal bekommst du nur Kindergeld, wenn du arbeitest, Elterngeld oder Arbeitslosengeld bekommst. Zum Beispiel bei der Aufenthaltserlaubnis zum Studium (§ 16b AufenthG) oder der Aufenthaltserlaubnis aus humanitären Gründen nach § 23 Abs. 1, § 23a oder § 25 Abs. 3 bis 5 AufenthG.
- Manchmal bekommst du aber auch Kindergeld, wenn du schon 15 Monate legal in Deutschland bist. Zum Beispiel bei der Aufenthaltserlaubnis aus humanitären Gründen nach § 23 Abs. 1, § 23a oder § 25 Abs. 3 bis 5 AufenthG.
- Es gibt Aufenthaltserlaubnisse , mit denen zu kein Kindergeld bekommen kannst. Das sind meistens Aufenthaltserlaubnisse , die nur einen kurzen Aufenthalt möglich machen. Zum Beispiel die Such-Chancenkarte nach § 20a Abs. 5 Satz 1 AufenthG.

Unbefristeter Aufenthaltstitel
Mit einem unbefristeten Aufenthaltstitel (zum Beispiel einer Niederlassungserlaubnis) hast du Zugang zum Kindergeld.

EU- oder EWR-Land
Wenn du aus einem anderen EU- oder EWR-Land kommst, hast du unter bestimmten Bedingungen Zugang zum Kindergeld. Wichtig ist, dass du freizügigkeitsberechtigt bist. Das bedeutet: Du lebst in einem anderen EU-Staat und erfüllst die Voraussetzungen nach dem Freizügigkeitsgesetz, zum Beispiel weil du in Deutschland arbeitest. Kindergeld bekommst du aber frühestens nach drei Monaten.
Manchmal bekommst du kein Kindergeld, wenn du arbeitslos bist.

Duldung oder Aufenthaltsgestattung
Wenn du eine Duldung oder eine Aufenthaltsgestattung hast, bekommst du kein Kindergeld. Es gibt eine Ausnahme: mit der Beschäftigungsduldung kannst du Kindergeld bekommen.
Du bekommst Kindergeld, wenn:
Nicht alle Personen haben Zugang zu Kindergeld. Je nach aufenthaltsrechtlicher Situation, gibt es bestimmte Besonderheiten. Es kommt dabei immer auf das Aufenthaltsrecht der Eltern an:
Was passiert, wenn mein Aufenthaltstitel bald endet?
Wenn du die Verlängerung für deinen Aufenthaltstitel vor Ablauf online beantragt hast, musst du die Bestätigung am Ende des Antrages als PDF abspeichern. Sie funktioniert wie eine Fiktionsbescheinigung . Die Familienkasse muss das akzeptieren.
Das Kindergeld läuft weiter, wenn du es auch vorher schon erhältst. Mehr Infos findest du hier:
Du solltest in eine Beratung kommen, wenn:
- du unsicher bist, ob du Kindergeld bekommen kannst, zum Beispiel nach einer Trennung oder nach Arbeitsverlust
- du nicht weißt, ob du mit deinem Aufenthaltstitel Kindergeld bekommen kannst
- sich dein Aufenthaltstitel ändert oder er schon abgelaufen ist
- du Hilfe brauchst bei Antworten oder Briefen von der Familienkasse – zum Beispiel bei einer Ablehnung, einer Aufforderung Geld zurückzuzahlen
- du der Familienkasse neue Informationen melden musst (auch "Mitteilungspflicht“) und dazu Fragen hast

Du kannst deinen Antrag auch vor Ort stellen. In Berlin gibt es mehrere Standorte der Familienkasse: Familienkassen | Bundesagentur für Arbeit
Der Antrag besteht aus den zwei Formularen:
Du brauchst für Kinder zwischen 0–18 Jahren die Steuer-ID von dir und deinem Kind. Falls dein Kind im Ausland geboren ist, lege auch eine Kopie der Geburtsurkunde in den Antrag. Wenn dein Kind zwischen 18–25 Jahren alt ist, muss es spezielle Bedingungen erfüllen, damit du Kindergeld bekommst.

Du stellst den Antrag auf Kindergeld bei der Familienkasse Berlin-Brandenburg. Du hast verschiedene Möglichkeiten:
Wichtig
Reiche den Antrag so früh wie möglich ein. Das Kindergeld wird nur bis maximal 6 Monate vor dem Antragstermin gezahlt.
Wenn du ein Baby erwartest, bekommst du nach der Geburt automatisch Post von der Familienkasse mit einem Code. Damit geht der Online-Antrag ganz einfach und schnell!
