Psychosocial Counseling

Do you have worries or feel stressed or overwhelmed? Here you can find information about free support, confidential counseling, and counseling centers.

What Is Psychosocial Counseling?

Do you feel stressed, lonely, or constantly worried? After arriving in a new country, many people experience sleep problems, stress, or loneliness. Sometimes difficult experiences from their home country or during their journey to Germany continue to affect them. Psychosocial counseling offers a space to talk. Counselors listen to you and help you cope better with these challenges – whether you are new to Berlin or have been living here for a longer time.

This type of counseling is available in Berlin free of charge, confidential, and often in multiple languages. You do not need to have an illness or a medical diagnosis to receive counseling. It is enough if you do not feel well or simply need someone to talk to.

When Can Psychosocial Counseling Help?

Psychosocial counseling can help you, for example, with the following problems:

  • Stress and feeling overwhelmed
  • Loneliness, anxiety, and homesickness
  • Sadness and suicidal thoughts
  • Traumatic experiences
  • Problems related to discrimination
  • Stress caused by authorities or paperwork

Psychosocial counseling is different from psychotherapy. Psychosocial counseling helps with everyday problems and emotional stress. Psychotherapy treats mental illnesses and is often paid for by health insurance. If you are unsure what is right for you, you can start with psychosocial counseling and decide together with the counseling center what best fits your needs.

Who Can Make use of Psychosocial Counseling?

Most psychosocial counseling services are available to all people aged 18 and older who live in Berlin and need psychosocial support. There are also special services for children and young people. In addition, there are specialized services for women, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other groups.

Who can come?

  • People with refugee or migration experience who have gone through difficult situations and would like support
  • People experiencing stress, anxiety, loneliness, or feeling overwhelmed
  • People with different residence permits (including Duldung (temporary suspension of deportation) or temporary residence permits )
  • Families, women, and young people who need support in their everyday lives
  • People experiencing stress because of authorities or paperwork
  • People who have already been in therapy and are looking for continued support after treatment

Do You Need Help?

You can receive psychosocial counseling even without health insurance. Many services are free of charge. Counseling centers can also help you if you have a Duldung (temporary suspension of deportation) or do not have a permanent residence permit. You do not need a referral or diagnosis from a doctor to receive this counseling. In some cases, you may have to wait longer to get an appointment.

How Does the Counseling Process Work?

Here you can see step by step how psychosocial counseling works:

  • You can call counseling centers, write an email, or go there in person and make an appointment
  • During the first conversation, you will look together at what kind of help is right for you
  • There are individual counseling sessions, groups, or courses to help you gain more stability in everyday life (for example women’s groups or career guidance)
  • Everything remains confidential
  • Language support is often available, for example in Arabic, Farsi, Ukrainian, English, French, and other languages. In some cases, counseling is available in your native language or interpreters are brought in. This means you can speak in the language that works best for you
  • If needed, you will be referred to other counseling centers for specific questions

Tip: If you can, bring your proof of identity and health insurance card with you – this makes registration easier.

Important

If you think you might harm yourself or no longer feel safe: Call the Berlin Crisis Service at 030 39063 - 0 (available 24 hours a day) or go to the emergency room of a hospital. You will receive immediate support there.
