Childcare for Primary School Children

Does your child need care after school? In Berlin, there are Ganztagsschulen (all-day schools) with many activities and support services in the morning, afternoon, and during school holidays. The ergänzende Förderung und Betreuung (eFöB) (supplementary childcare and support) in primary school is often simply called "eFöB" (colloquially also Hort).

Which Authority Is Responsible?

Jugendamt (Youth Welfare Office)

What Is Ganztagsbetreuung (All-Day Care) in Primary School?

In Berlin, all primary schools are Ganztagsschulen (all-day schools). Your child can learn, play, and receive care there from grades 1 to 6. There are two types (opening hours may vary slightly depending on the school):

Offene Ganztagsschule (open all-day school)
Classes take place from 8:00 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. eFöB (supplementary childcare and support) is available as needed between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. and from 1:30 to 6:00 p.m. Children can be picked up from 1:30 p.m.

Gebundene Ganztagsschule (integrated all-day school)
Classes and leisure activities alternate between 8:00 a.m. and 4:00 p.m. eFöB (supplementary childcare and support) is available as needed between 6:00 and 8:00 a.m. and from 4:00 to 6:00 p.m. Children can be picked up from 4:00 p.m.

What Does "Hort" or "eFöB" Mean?

The ergänzende Förderung und Betreuung (eFöB) (supplementary childcare and support), or simply eFöB, is care provided outside school lessons. This includes:

  • Early morning care: 6:00 to 8:00 a.m.
  • Afternoon care: after school until 6:00 p.m.
  • Holiday care

Every child needs a Betreuungsgutschein (childcare voucher) for this care. The voucher states the care hours that fit your situation. You can find the application under Step by Step to the childcare voucher Schritt für Schritt zum Betreuungsgutschein.

Important

In the summer before starting school, your child can attend eFöB from August and get to know the school and educators in a calm setting. Remember to apply for the Betreuungsgutschein (childcare voucher) as early as possible (at the latest 3 months in advance). Your childcare place at the Kita (daycare center) ends on 31 July. From August onward, your future school child can no longer attend Kita.

How much does a childcare place at the eFöB cost?

Depending on the child’s grade level, eFöB in Berlin may be free of charge. The costs and care hours are listed in your Betreuungsgutschein (childcare voucher).

  • Grade 1 to 3: Care is free of charge for all families. Every child has the right to a place.
  • From grade 4: The price depends on the parents' income and the times booked.

Lunch included: Free of charge for all children in Grades 1 to 6. It is best to ask the school directly how to register your child for lunch.

Step by Step to the Betreuungsgutschein (Childcare Voucher)

  1. Find the eFöB application that matches your type of school (for example, Offene Ganztagsschule) Antrag für die eFöB. If you are unsure, ask your school which application is the right one.
  2. For Grades 4–6, you must also submit the document "Erklärung für die Festsetzung der Beteiligung an den Kosten der Tagesbetreuung" (Declaration for the Determination of the Contribution to Childcare Costs).
  3. Both parents must sign the application (alternatively, add an authorization from the other parent).
  4. Check which documents are relevant for you, for example proof of income for Grades 4–6. You can find a list of required documents in the Service Portal under Unterlagenliste.
  5. Submit the application and documents to the school (ideally together with the school registration).
  6. The Jugendamt (Youth Welfare Office) reviews the application .
  7. You will receive the Betreuungsgutschein (childcare voucher) by post.

Can My Child Attend eFöB if They Have a Disability?

Yes. Children with disabilities also receive appropriate support in eFöB. A qualified professional supports your child during group activities. Does your child need practical assistance or care? For example, help moving around the building with a wheelchair, eating, or using the toilet? Then your child may need a professional support person (schulische Inklusionsassistenz – school inclusion assistance). Speak with the professional staff in the eFöB or at the school about this. The SIBUZ (School Psychology and Inclusion Support and Counseling Center) in your district can also advise you on your questions.
