Psychosocial counseling

Are you worried, stressed, or overwhelmed? Here you can find information about free and confidential counseling and counseling centers.

What is psychosocial counseling?

Do you feel stressed, lonely, or worried all the time? After arriving in a new country, many people experience sleep problems, stress, or loneliness. Sometimes difficult experiences from their home country or during their journey to Germany continue to affect them. Psychosocial counseling gives you a chance to talk to someone. Counselors listen to you and help you cope with these challenges – whether you are new to Berlin or have lived here for a while.

This type of counseling is free and confidential and is often available in several languages. You do not need to have a mental health condition or a medical diagnosis to get counseling. You can get counseling if you are not feeling well or simply need someone to talk to.

When can psychosocial counseling help?

Psychosocial counseling can help if you are experiencing:

  • Stress and feeling overwhelmed
  • Loneliness, anxiety, or homesickness
  • Sadness or suicidal thoughts
  • Traumatic experiences
  • Discrimination and related challenges
  • Stress caused by dealing with public authorities or paperwork

Psychosocial counseling is different from psychotherapy . Psychosocial counseling helps with everyday problems and emotional stress. Psychotherapy treats mental illnesses and is often paid for by health insurance. If you are unsure what is right for you, you can start with psychosocial counseling and decide together with the counseling center what best suits your needs.

Who can get psychosocial counseling?

Most psychosocial counseling services are available to anyone aged 18 and over who lives in Berlin and needs psychosocial support. There are also dedicated services for children and young people. There are also specialized services for women, people with disabilities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and other groups.

Who can access these services?

  • People who have come to Germany as refugees or migrants and who have gone through difficult situations and would like support
  • People experiencing stress, anxiety, loneliness, or feelings of being overwhelmed
  • People with different Aufenthaltstitel (residence titles) , including people with a Duldung (temporary suspension of deportation) or temporary residence permit
  • Families, women, and young people who need support
  • People experiencing stress because of authorities or bureaucracy
  • People who have been in therapy and are looking for ongoing support afterwards

Do you need help?

You can access psychosocial counseling even without health insurance. Many services are free of charge. Counseling centers can help you even if you have a Duldung (temporary suspension of deportation) or do not have a permanent residence title. You do not need a referral or diagnosis from a doctor to receive counseling. In some cases, you may have to wait to get an appointment.

How does the counseling process work?

Here is an overview of what takes place during psychosocial counseling:

  • Call a counseling center, write an email, or go there in person and make an appointment
  • During the first appointment, you will talk about your situation and discuss what kind of help you need
  • Support can include individual counseling sessions, groups, or courses to help you build more stability in everyday life (for example women’s groups or career guidance)
  • Everything you share is confidential
  • Language support is often available, for example in Arabic, Farsi, Ukrainian, English, French, and other languages. In some cases, you can get counseling in your preferred language or with an interpreter.. You can speak the language that feels most comfortable for you
  • If necessary, you may be referred to another counseling center for specific issues

Tip: If possible, bring your proof of identity and health insurance card with you – this makes the registration process easier.
