Apprenticeships

Do you want to start an Ausbildung (apprenticeship) in Berlin? Here you can find important tips, Voraussetzungen (requirements), and support services.

Which apprenticeship is right for me?

There are 16 different occupational fields in Germany and more than 300 apprenticeship professions. If you are not yet sure which apprenticeship suits you, you can take a career orientation test at Test zur Berufsorientierung or find information online at Berufe.net.

Before deciding on an apprenticeship , you can also do an internship to get to know the profession better.

Find an apprenticeship position in Berlin now!

What language level do I need for an apprenticeship?

For most apprenticeships , there is no fixed language level you must have. However, classes at the Berufsschule (OSZ) (vocational school) are taught in German. To understand the lessons and pass the exams, a minimum level of B2 is recommended. For school-based apprenticeships , a higher language level may sometimes be required.

If you want to enter the country with a visa for an apprenticeship , you usually need a B1 Sprachniveau (level of language proficiency).

Language Exams and Certificates

Which apprenticeships can I do without a school-leaving certificate?

You can find out which school-leaving qualification is recommended for a profession on Ausbildung.de. Click on an apprenticeship profession and check the section “Empf. Schulabschluss” (recommended school-leaving certificate).

There are only a few apprenticeships for which a school-leaving certificate is required — for example, many school-based apprenticeships . For the Berufsschule (OSZ) (vocational school), you will still need basic skills in math, German, English and other subjects.

Your application will have better chances if you obtained your school-leaving certificate in Germany, or if your certificate from another country has been officially recognized in Berlin.

Do you want to get a school-leaving certificate in Berlin later?

There are many counseling centers in Berlin that can support you. Here you can find suitable contacts.

Does an apprenticeship help secure my residence status?

Yes, there are several ways to secure your residence status while doing an apprenticeship . Whether this is possible for you depends on your individual situation.

Get counselling to find out which options apply to your specific case.

When can I start an apprenticeship?

In Berlin, most apprenticeships begin on 1 August or 1 September. Some Berufsschulen (OSZ) (vocational schools) also offer an additional start date in spring. However, you should start your application earlier, as companies often choose their apprentices several months before the official start.

If you missed the beginning of the apprenticeship period, you can still use the time until the next start date in a meaningful way. For example, you can do an Einstiegsqualifizierung (EQ) (entry-level vocational qualification) or an internship .

How do I apply for an apprenticeship?

  • For a company-based apprenticeship

You apply directly to a company for the apprenticeship . If you receive an acceptance, the company will register you at the Berufsschule (OSZ) (vocational school). Depending on the profession, there is a specific school that matches your field.

  • For a school-based apprenticeship

You register directly at the Berufsfachschule (technical vocational school ) for the apprenticeship . Most schools have contact persons or information days for interested applicants. This is a good opportunity to ask questions about the school and the registration process.

You can find more information about the application process here: So bewirbst du dich auf eine Ausbildung | Bundesagentur für Arbeit

Ausbildung

Motivationsschreiben

What is that?

Where can I get it?

How does it look?

Tabellarischer Lebenslauf

What is that?

Where can I get it?

Du erstellst den Lebenslauf selbst am Computer. Du kannst auch Vorlagen im Internet nutzen.

CV | Europass

How does it look?

Arbeitszeugnis

What is that?

Im Arbeitszeugnis steht, was du genau gemacht hast.

Where can I get it?
