EU Citizen Card (eID)

What is that?

The Unionsbürgerkarte (EU citizen card) is also called the eID-Karte (eID card). It is a chip card for citizens of the EU and of Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. This card allows electronic identification. You need it, for example, if you want to submit applications to authorities online or open a bank account online. You must be at least 13 years old to get a Unionsbürgerkarte (EU citizen card). There is no obligation to have a Unionsbürgerkarte (EU citizen card).

Where can I get it?

You can apply for the Unionsbürgerkarte (EU citizen card) at the Bürgeramt (Citizens’ Office). For this, you need a valid national passport or a valid national identity card and a registration certificate (Meldebescheinigung). The card is valid for 10 years and costs 37 euros. You can make an appointment directly with the Bürgeramt (Citizens’ Office).

How does it look?

It is a plastic card. It is the same size as an identity card. It includes:

  • surname and first name
  • date and place of birth
  • validity period of the card

The card does not contain a photo of you, but it does contain a chip. More data is stored on the chip, for example:

  • nationality
  • address
