What is it?

The State Office for Refugee Affairs (LFU) is the central authority in Berlin responsible for supporting refugees. It was previously known as the Landesamt für Flüchtlingsangelegenheiten (LAF).

What are the authority's responsibilities?

The State Office for Refugee Affairs (LFU) is mainly responsible for:

  • registering, supporting, and accommodating refugees who are new to Berlin. If you want to apply for asylum in Berlin, contact the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LFU) as soon as possible. The office is located at Oranienburger Straße 285, 13437 Berlin-Reinickendorf
  • providing benefits under the AsylbLG, accommodation, and health insurance for people in the asylum procedure
  • supporting refugees with special protection needs (for example: people with disabilities, pregnant people, or LGBTI* people)
  • counseling about options for returning to your country of origin if an asylum application has been rejected

Who is it for?

You can contact the State Office for Refugee Affairs (LFU) if you:

  • are new to Berlin and would like to apply for asylum
  • are new to Berlin, are from Ukraine and are seeking protection
  • are from a third country and have an Aufenthaltsgestattung (temporary permission to stay during the asylum procedure) (up to 6 months after the end of the asylum procedure)
  • want to return voluntarily to your country of origin
