ELSTER certificate

What is it?

An ELSTER certificate is a digital file with the file extension .pfx. You use it together with your password to log in to ELSTER. With ELSTER, you can send tax information to the Finanzamt (Tax Office) online.

Where can I get it?

You can get an ELSTER certificate on the ELSTER website. Here’s how it works:

  1. Create an account with ELSTER.
  2. You will receive an Aktivierungs-ID (activation ID) by email.
  3. You will receive an Aktivierungs-Code (activation code) by mail at the address registered for you with the Bürgeramt (Citizens' Office).
  4. Use both codes to activate your account.
  5. Download the certificate file and save it in a safe place. You will need it again later.
