Utilities and other housing costs are expenses you pay in addition to your rent. These may include:
- water
- heating
- cleaning shared areas of the building, such as hallways
You usually pay these costs each month along with your rent as an advance payment. Once a year, your landlord sends you a statement showing the actual costs. If you paid more than your share, you get a refund. If you paid less, you have to pay the difference.
