The Unionsbürgerkarte (eID Card for citizens of the EU and the EEA) is also called the eID-Karte (eID card). It is a chip card for citizens of the EU and of Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein. You can use the card to identify yourself online. For example, you can use it to apply for government services online or open a bank account online. You must be at least 13 years old to get a Unionsbürgerkarte. There is no obligation to have a Unionsbürgerkarte.
You can apply for the Unionsbürgerkarteat the Bürgeramt (Citizens’ Office). For this, you need a valid national passport or a valid national identity card and a Meldebescheinigung (residence registration certificate). The card is valid for 10 years and costs 37 euros. You can make an appointment directly with the Bürgeramt.
The Unionsbürgerkarte is a plastic card. It is the same size as an identity card. It includes:
- your last name and first name
- your date and place of birth
- the card's expiration date
The card does not have a photo, but it has a chip. The chip stores additional information, such as:
- your nationality
- your address
