Kinderreisepass (child passport)

What is it?

A Kinderreisepass (child passport) is a travel document and Identitätsnachweis (proof of identity) for a child. It shows the child’s identity and nationality.

Where can I get it?

Some countries issue special passports for children. Other countries issue regular passports for children.

Germany has not issued Kinderreisepässe since 2024. If your child has German citizenship, you can apply for a Reisepass (passport) or Personalausweis (ID card) at the Bürgeramt (Citizens Office).

If your child does not have German citizenship, contact the embassy or consulate of your country of origin.

What does it look like?

A Kinderreisepass is a small booklet. It looks similar to a regular Reisepass.

The Kinderreisepass contains important information about the child, such as:

  • photo
  • name
  • date of birth
  • nationality
  • passport number
