The elektronische Gesundheitskarte (eGK; electronic health insurance card) is a card from your gesetzliche Krankenkasse (statutory health insurance company). The card has an electronic chip that stores information. When you use the card, your doctor's office or hospital can see that you have health insurance.
You get the elektronische Gesundheitskarte from your gesetzliche Krankenkasse. Your Krankenkasse will send you the card by mail. If you do not have a card yet, contact your gesetzliche Krankenkasse.
If you have private health insurance, you will receive proof of your health insurance from your private Krankenversicherung (private health insurance company). This may be a card or proof on your phone.
The elektronische Gesundheitskarte is a plastic card. It contains important information, such as:
- your name
- your insurance number
- the name of your health insurance company
