Citizenship shows which country a person is a citizen of. It gives them certain rights and responsibilities. You can have more than one citizenship. In some countries, you get citizenship if you are born there. In other countries, such as Germany, you get citizenship if one of your parents is a citizen of that country when you are born. A child born in Germany to foreign parents can also get German citizenship at birth if one parent has been living in Germany legally for at least five years and has a permanent right of residence when the child is born. You can also acquire citizenship through Einbürgerung (naturalization).
